Context

Rockset’s design system had not been updated for nearly three years.

• Over time, the UI became fragmented due to inconsistent design decisions, outdated components, and expanding product complexity.
• Engineers created multiple variants of components, which increased maintenance overhead and led to inconsistent UX.
• It became clear the design system required a fundamental overhaul.

Problem

How to modernize Rockset’s visual system and component library in a way that improves design quality, accelerates engineering efficiency, and prepares us for future scale?

Approach

• Conducting a full design audit of typography, iconography, spacing, colors, and layout
• Evaluating whether to evolve the existing system or adopt a new one
• Creating proof-of-concept mocks to gain executive buy-in
• Customizing the system with Rockset’s needs: typography styles, a new icon set, and scalable component patterns

Proof of Concept

To win support from stakeholders, I redesigned several key workflows using a commercial design system, showcasing improvements in usability, consistency, and visual polish. This helped secure leadership support to move forward.
